ATLANTIC COAST CHAMPIONSHIPS

Venue

The Middle Township PAC offers an excellent opportunity for students to perform in a professional theater that has hosted many of the great jazz ensembles and performers of our time, including the Count Basie Orchestra, Maynard Ferguson and Peter Nero. The stage offers an acoustic shell with excellent lighting and sound support. A Steinway D-9 Concert Grand Piano will be provided. Ample seating is available for over 1,000 spectators. A Special Admission Price for this TIA Event ONLY is just $5.00. All TIA Wildwood Weekend admission wristbands will be accepted for this event.

Entrance Requirements

  • TIA Regional Chapter membership
  • TIA Wildwood Weekend Registration (contact Jack Drummond at 856-935-4940)
  • Participation is one (1) TIA Jazz Ensemble Competition prior to April 25, 2010

Fees

  • $250 TIA Jazz registration (commuter)  fee  (Richard Ludwig coord.)   or  $500 TIA Weekend In Wildwood Registration fee (including motel)  (Jack Drummond coord.)

Classifications

Three (e) competitive classes will be offered this year:

 

  • A CLASS JAZZ is for developing programs with limited instrumentation and resources.
    This class also includes Middle School and Junior High School programs. (Arrangements - Grade 1, 2 & 3)
  • OPEN CLASS JAZZ is for established scholastic competitive programs. (Arrangements = Grade 4 & 5)
  • WORLD CLASS JAZZ is for mature ensembles playing at the highest competitive level. (Arrangements - Grade 5 & 6)

 

Performance Requirements


View from stage at the MTPACEach ensemble must play a minimum of fifteen (15) and not more than twenty (20) minutes of music. There is no required musical program. However, programs are expected to be well balanced and provide sufficient variety of styles for valid adjudication (i.e., swing, ballad, jazz, latin, etc.).

In an effort to minimize logistics, all ensembles are requested to conform to a "traditional" Big Band setup configuration: 1st row - saxes (floor level); 2nd row - trombones (8" risers); 3rd row - trumpets (16" risers). the rhythm section at stage level to the audience's left of the horns. The Middle PAC sound system will be used by all ensembles.




Evaluation

Three approved NJA Jazz Adjudicators will be used for all TIA events. the NJA panel will be staffed with adjudicators who have a jazz performance background in reeds, brass or rhythm section.

Scoring

Lobby of the MTPACAll classes will be judged on a scale of  70-100. Each judge will rank and rate in 7 sub-captions:

  • Quality Of Sound (15)
  • Balance/Blend (15)
  • Interpretation (15)
  • Musicality (15)
  • Rhythm (15)
  • Solos/Improv (15)
  • Repertoire (10)
The three judge's total scores will be averaged to determine the achievement levels and placements. There will be no penalties assessed. However, the Chief Judge may disqualify a unit for disruptive conduct and/or flagrant abuse of our operating procedures.

Awards

Scores and placements will be announced for each group in each class, as well as their achievement level:

  • GOLD (94-100)
  • SILVER (87-93.9)
  • BRONZE (80-86.9)
  • FESTIVAL (70-79.9)

Speciality awards (soloists, sectional awards, etc.) will also be announced. Ensembles will receive individual score sheets and a cassette recording of each judge's comments.TIA Atlantic Coast Championship medals and flag will be presented to the 1st place ensemble in each class (A CLASS JAZZ , OPEN CLASS JAZZ and WORLD CLASS JAZZ)
